Kurumayama Highlands: a Gentle Hike Near Tokyo

The Kurumayama Highlands are located on the border between Chino City and Suwa City in Nagano Prefecture, and the whole area of Kurumayama is called the Kurumayama Plateau.

The Kurumayama Kogen Trekking Course offers a range of routes catering to hikers of all skill levels, from novices to seasoned experts. These routes are centered around the majestic summit of Mt. Kurumayama, the highest peak of Kirigamine. Regardless of the specific route you opt for, you’ll be treated to the splendid and ever-changing seasonal vistas that are unique to the Kurumayama Plateau, as well as iconic views of Japan’s renowned mountain landscapes. While the duration and distance of your trek may significantly vary depending on your chosen course, the standard route ascends to the summit of Mt. Kurumayama via a lift and then winds its way around the picturesque Kurumayama Wetland before returning, typically taking around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.

I opted for a lift ride to reach the summit of Mt. Kurumayama. From there, I embarked on a hike to explore the Kirigamine area, where I spent an overnight stay. On my return journey, I chose to hike back via the scenic Kurumayama route. Now, after providing insights into the Tokyo access, allow me to share the details of the hiking course I recently undertook.

Getting to Kurumayama Highlands is not that hard even if its your first trip to Japan.

First, go to Shinjuku Station and take a limited express Azusa train to Chino Station.

You can read more about this train and online booking service here. Don't worry — it's quite frequent. Thought the trip takes around 2 hours, you can watch the varying mountain landscapes of Mt. Fuji, Yatsugatake, and the Akaishi Mountains (also known as the Southern Alps) pass outside their windows on your way.

Once you arrive at Chino Station, head to the Alpico Transportation Information Center (see it on Google Maps) and take the Shirakaba-ko–Kurumayama Line bus bound for Kurumayama Kogen. This local bus will take you to the start of the hike in about an hour. Be sure to check the bus schedule before your trip. There is no English version of the website, but you can use Google Translate to view the timetable here (look for the Lake Shirakaba / Kurumayama Kogen Line — 白樺湖・車山高原線).

If walking isn’t your preference, or if you’re with young children, the observation lift offers a convenient alternative. Opting for the lift ensures a swift journey to the mountain’s summit.

The combination of the Skyliner and Sky Panorama transports you to the peak in just approximately 15 minutes one way.

Please be aware that the observatory lift operates from mid-April to early November each year. Keep in mind that lift operations may be subject to closure due to weather conditions, so it’s advisable to check the official website for updates.

Starting from Kurumayama Sky Plaza, you’ll embark on an exciting journey to the summit of Kurumayama, aided by two high-speed quad lifts, namely the Skyliner and Sky Panorama.

As you climb, the sky opens up above you. On the way down, you’ll see Lake Shirakaba and Mt. Tateshina stretching into the distance.

Upon disembarking from the second lift, you’ll find yourself standing at the very summit of Mt. Kurumayama, Kirigamine’s highest peak, towering at 1,925 meters above sea level. Here, a captivating 360-degree panoramic view unfolds before your eyes. Gaze upon the Yatsugatake Mountain Range, the South, Central, and Northern Alps, and, if the weather smiles upon you, even catch a distant glimpse of the iconic Mt. Fuji. Don’t forget to visit the Kurumayama Shrine nestled atop the mountain, encircled by four guardian pillars, and offer your prayers for a safe journey ahead.

It’s important to be aware that the weather in Kirigamine can change rapidly. Even if the morning skies are initially obscured by fog or clouds, they often give way to clear, inviting vistas, adding to the allure of your trekking adventure. Don’t forget to carry an umbrella, just in case!

After taking a well-deserved break at the summit, let’s begin our descent from the peak of Mt. Kurumayama to the grassy meadows. A word of caution: this section includes a notably steep downhill stretch, so exercise extra care while navigating it.

Upon reaching the Kurayama Kata parking lot, you can find respite and refreshment at the charming Korobokkuru Hyute (ころぼっくるひゅって) restaurant. Here, you can indulge in a cozy café experience while gazing out at the panoramic views of Kurumayama Wetland and Kirigamine. Be sure to try the freshly brewed siphon coffee on the open terrace, and explore the ever-changing cake menu.

You next step would be take a route in the direction of Kirigamine, to stay for a night at one of the mountain huts. These rustic refuges provide weary hikers with cozy shelter, warm meals, and a chance to connect with fellow adventurers. I stayed at Hutte Kirigamine and booked it via japanese site Rakuten. I know it is not the easiest task, but if you use Google translator option, I am sure you can do it! Another option would be making a direct call to the hut.

The mountain huts exude a cozy and inviting atmosphere, becoming an indispensable part of the Kirigamine trekking experience. Hutte Kirigamine, in particular, boasts a petite onsen, offering the perfect opportunity to unwind following a day of hiking.

Set your alarm a tad early the next morning to witness nature’s enchantment! Kirigamine frequently dons a thick veil of fog, especially during specific times of the year, such as the early mornings and late evenings. Kirigamine’s fog emanates primarily from its elevated position and its close proximity to Lake Suwa, the largest lake in Nagano Prefecture. The relatively warm waters of Lake Suwa can intertwine with the colder mountain air, giving rise to fog when certain temperature and humidity conditions align.

Following your breakfast at the hut, embark on the return hike to the Kurayama Kata parking lot, retracing the same path in reverse. If you find yourself with some energy to spare, consider a detour to explore the Yashima Wetland before heading back to your starting point, the Kurumayama Kogen Observation Lift. From there, you can catch a bus back to Chino Station.
